Tetris

How to play Tetris

Tetris is the iconic block-stacking puzzle. Seven shapes called tetrominoes fall one at a time; rotate and position them so each horizontal row fills completely. Full rows clear and score points. The blocks fall faster as you level up, so clear lines quickly to keep the stack from reaching the top.

  1. 1 Move pieces with the left and right arrows; rotate with the up arrow.
  2. 2 Press down to soft-drop, or space to hard-drop instantly.
  3. 3 Fill an entire row to clear it and score points.
  4. 4 The game ends when the stack reaches the top of the board.

Frequently asked questions

How do you score more in Tetris?

Clear multiple rows at once. Clearing four lines together (a "Tetris") scores far more than four single-line clears.

What are the controls?

Left and right arrows move the piece, up rotates it, down soft-drops, and space hard-drops it to the bottom.

Does Tetris get faster?

Yes. Each level increases the fall speed, so you have less time to place pieces as you progress.

Is there an end to Tetris?

There is no win state — you play until the stack tops out, aiming for the highest score and level.
